Kandy

 

Kandy was once the last Sinhalese Kingdom before it fell to the British in 1815. Nestled by a circle of mountains the cool Kandy climate with its lush greenery, picturesque lake, the country's longest river and misty mountains is a destination that is naturally appealing to the visitor. It is also home to the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha which is preserved and protected in the Dalada Maligawa, (The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic)

Buduruwagala

 

During the Round Trip, we recommend a stop in Buduruvagala near Wellawaya. Here you can visit the oldest "Rock-cut" Buddha statue Sri Lanka.

The Horton Plains

 

The Horton Plains is is a National Park in the Highlands. It is about 2000m, which brings a cooler climate than in lowlands with it. The average temperature is 16°C. In winter, the nights are so cold that it may even lead to frost.

The Park has an area of 31.6km² and is partially covered by cloud forest, some of wet grassland.

The most famous attraction of the park is "World's End", a steep slope of about 1050m, with a clear view of the possible (in the morning) a view to the sea.

"The Bakers Falls" waterfalls are the second main attraction of the park. They arise from the river "Belihul Oya", a tributary of the "Walawe" and are about 20 meters high.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

 

As part of the Sri Lankan government’s commitment to protect the elephant, authorities the Wildlife Conservation effort also run the Pinnawala orphanage situated northwest of the town of Kegalle, There are only a few elephant orphanages in the world. Pinnawala has now become one of the bigger orphanages and is quite well known worldwide. This facility attracts both local and foreign visitors and the income helps to maintain the activities of the orphanage.

Hakgala Botanical Garden

 

Botanic Gardens at Hakgala were established in 1861 for the purpose of experimentation and promotion of Cinchona cultivation in Sri Lanka. The gardens lying in the hill country among Sri Lanka's tea plantations in the Nuwara Eliya district, the popular holiday resort.

Ella & Nanu-Oya

 

Between Great Western, Radella and Nanu Oya the track hugs the jagged rock face a few meters from where it drops away into the valley below. As the train travels at speed, dancing precariously between hairpin curves at the edge of the valley, a sense of weightlessness and grandeur will envelope you as you suddenly feel like you are on top of the world.

Sigiriya Rock

 

A reddish-brown rocks in the form of a mesa extends widely visible from the jungles of the island center and is considered by many as a wonder of the world. At the entrance guarded by stone lions, of which only the huge ornate paws are preserved today. Several gardens (water, stone and Terrace) witnesses of the power of the former empire. On the rocks there are colored frescoes, the clouds girl, whose graceful beauty is worth the steep path to half the height of the mountain.

Nuwara Eliya

 

Nuwara Eliya is a city, in the hill country of the Central Province, Sri Lanka. The town's attractions include the golf course, trout streams, Victoria Park, and boating or fishing on Lake Gregory. Victoria Park is an attractive and well-used oasis.

One of the distinctive features of Nuwara Eliya countryside is the widespread growing of vegetables, fruit and flowers Usually associated with temperate Europe. This "Little England" is covered with terraces growing potatoes, carrots, leeks, and roses, interspersed with tea bushes on the steeper slopes.

Yala National Park

 

Yala National Park is the most visited and second largest National Park in Sri Lanka. Actually it consists of five blocks, two of which are now open to the public; and also adjoining parks. The blocks have individual names also, like Ruhuna National Park for the (best known) block 1 and Kumana National Park or 'Yala East' for the adjoining area. It is situated in the southeast region of the country, and lies in Southern Province and Uva Province. The park covers 979 square kilometres (378 sq mi) and is located about 300 kilometres (190 mi) from Colombo. Yala was designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900, and, along with Wilpattu it was one of the first two national parks in Sri Lanka, having been designated in 1938. The park is best known for its variety of wild animals. It is important for the conservation of Sri Lankan Elephants and aquatic birds.

Udawalawe National Park

 

Opened in 1972, the Udawalawe National Park in Sri Lanka. Udawalawe is known for its large herds of elephants, as well as three deer species. Wild boar and buffalo are common, bears and leopards are uncommon. The bird life is rich, famous for its large number of de park of birds of prey.
